
WHAT TO EXPECT
In this four-hour, hands-on class students learn the essential skills needed to confidently sail a Hobie 14. The session begins with a short classroom-based introduction covering the fundamentals of sailing. Students then head out on the water for practical instruction. Members who demonstrate all required skills, become eligible for Hobie 14 boat access, allowing them to take the boat out independently.
Skills Taught:
- Fundamentals of sailing theory
- Different ways to identify the wind and gain understanding of the physical relationship between wind and the sailboat
- Rigging, de-rigging, and storage
- Necessary knots used in sailing (figure 8 and bowline)
- Steering the boat
- Sail trim
- Identifying points of sail
- Departing and returning to the dock/beach (thinking, planning, & acting ahead)
- Learning to properly accelerate/decelerate
- Maritime right of way rules
- What to do when things go wrong
- Making good decisions to stay safe on the water

Cost: $250/person; all transactions incur a $3 service fee. Payment is due at registration and is non-refundable but can be transferred to another class or a membership.
Who Takes This Class: This class is for beginners who want an introduction to the sport of sailing on a multi-hulled boat and wish to learn sailing basics. This class is also for more experienced sailors who have never sailed a Hobie or other multi-hulled boat. Members who successfully complete this course and/or pass a skipper checkout can take the Hobie 14 out under their membership when it is not being used for classes.
Duration: 4 hours
Student Instructor Ratio: 1-2 students / 1 instructor; Max 2 students per class

Prerequisites: None, you do not have to be a member to take this class
Age: 15+ without a parent/guardian. Age 12-14 accompanied by an enrolled parent/guardian.
What to Bring/Wear:
- Weather appropriate shorts, swimsuits, tech shirts
- Water shoes or other shoes that can get wet but stay on your feet. You will get wet.
- Sunscreen
- Sunglasses
- Hat
- Water bottle
- Life Jacket - If you do not have one we will provide it.

CANCELATION POLICY:
- LNCS Cancelation: If LNCS cancels class due to inclement weather, student will be rescheduled. Refunds are not given.
- STUDENT Cancelation / Rescheduling: Last minute rescheduling and no-shows are costly and cumbersome. LNCS does not offer refunds, but we do allow you to reschedule under the following guidelines:
- Rescheduling is NOT PERMITTED less than 7 days before the start of class.
- Registered students may transfer to another class, pending availability, up to 7 days before the start of their original class at no additional cost.
- If a student reschedules more than once, a $75 rescheduling fee will be charged each additional time.

You will enjoy sailing with and learning from other sailors of all skill levels during Social Sails and becoming skipper qualified so that you can Open Sail.
